Crowned Heads of Europe

Premium collection of 24 silver coins with the portraits of European rulers

Europe has a long history of royal dynasties. From ancient times until today, crowned heads have ruled over their subjects and continue to do so today, although the power of today's monarchs is much more limited than it was 200 years ago. There are currently still twelve monarchies in Europe, in Andorra, Belgium, Denmark, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Spain, the Vatican and the United Kingdom.

The crown is the classic symbol of power. In ancient Egypt, Persia and Greece, rulers wore crowns. Its name comes from the ancient Latin word "corona" (wreath). In the Roman Empire, the diadem or laurel wreath was used by emperors as a symbol of rulership. The Persian kings were among the first to wear a closed crown, a form that was later adopted by the Byzantine emperors. Since the European Middle Ages, the correctly performed coronation ceremony has given the ruler legitimacy. The tradition continues to this day in European royal families.
