Small Silver Coins

Modern silver coins as of 1789 with small diameter

The usage of silver as a minting material has changed significantly throughout history. While today, usually, fiat money is in circulation and silver coins serve primarily for commemorative issues, in the past, the denomination of a coin was defined by its weight and metal value. Thus, even small denominations were minted from precious metal such as silver to ensure actual equivalent value. Nowadays, as cash is increasingly being displaced by digital transactions and some states have already discontinued the minting of subunits altogether, these historic small silver coins are beautiful reminders to appreciate even lesser values.

This program includes small silver coins from countries around the world. None of them has a diameter greater than 20 mm.
