Portuguese Discoveries
The Portuguese colonial empire emerged during the so-called “Golden Age of Discoveries” and was the first global empire in history. It began in the 14th century with a few islands in the Atlantic, such as the Canary Islands and the Azores. This was followed by expeditions along the African coast until 1488, when the first successful rounding of the Cape of Good Hope took place. While Portugal was competing with Spain in the New World, the discovery of the southern sea route to India in 1498 opened up numerous opportunities for trade relations and colonies in Asia. In 1543, Portuguese navigators were even the first Europeans to reach Japan.
In commemoration of famous navigators, sailing ships and events of this time, the Portuguese mint issued 11 series, each consisting of four 100-escudos or 200-escudos coins. We can offer you all series with informative certificates and packaging, also in 24-karat gold-plating.
