Silver Coins from the Small State of San Marino
Founded in 301 AD, San Marino is considered the oldest republic in the world. Its political system is also particularly unique. As in the Roman Republic, two elected heads of state are always appointed at the same time. San Marino is an enclave completely surrounded by Italy. Its name comes from Saint Marinus, a stonemason who built a chapel on Monte Titano. His small Christian community eventually founded the state that still exists today.
The San Marinese Lira was the currency of the microstate until the introduction of the Euro in 2002. What is special about the coins is that San Marino has issued a new set with new designs every year since 1972. The motifs include, for example, historical personalities, animals, athletes and the Three Towers of San Marino.
