Pope Paul VI
The Italian Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini (1897-1978) was elected the 262nd Bishop of Rome in 1963. He was particularly committed to ecumenism and facilitated significant approaches between the Vatican and the Protestant and the Orthodox Churches. In addition, he focused on the unjust economic development between the northern and southern hemispheres.
Paul VI was the first pope in history to make apostolic journeys to other continents, and is therefore called the "Pilgrim Pope." Another nickname for him refers to his decisive contribution to the implementation of the resolutions of the Second Vatican Council; it is "Council Pope." Paul VI's pontificate ended with his death in the famous "year of the three popes" in 1978.
